Now in its sixth year since going live in September 2020, Avalanche can no longer be explained by its early billing as merely a "fast up-and-coming chain."

As 2026 unfolds, institutional adoption keeps stacking up—the first U.S. AVAX spot ETF, Aave V4's debut deployment, and Hyundai Motor Group's remittance pilot—yet the price of AVAX remains stuck in the $6 range.

What Is Avalanche (AVAX)? | A Veteran U.S.-Born Layer 1

Avalanche is a Layer 1 blockchain developed by Ava Labs that launched its mainnet in September 2020. Its native token, AVAX, ranks 32nd by market capitalization (as of July 24, 2026) and can be purchased even on Japanese exchanges.

The network has a three-layer structure: the X-Chain for transfers, the P-Chain that manages staking, and the C-Chain where apps run. What readers usually interact with is the EVM-compatible C-Chain, where wallets you already have—such as MetaMask—work as-is.

On the C-Chain alone, roughly 2.25 million transactions and about 219,000 active addresses are in motion each day (July 23, 2026). These are figures anyone can verify, published by the official Metrics API with no key required.

Avalanche Consensus and Dedicated Chains That Run for 1.33 AVAX a Month

The core of Avalanche's technology is a proprietary consensus method designed to finalize transactions in under a second even while supporting thousands of validators (the nodes that verify transactions). The number of validators actually running on the Primary Network right now is 625 (as of July 23, 2026, per the official Metrics API).

Previously the choice was binary: classic BFT-style consensus, in which everyone communicates with everyone, can't scale up the validator count, while Bitcoin-style consensus finalizes probabilistically and slowly. Avalanche consensus escapes this binary by rapidly repeating a process of randomly selecting a small number of validators to vote, locking in agreement like an avalanche.

The other pillar is a design that adds a dedicated Layer 1 (formerly called a Subnet) per app to scale throughput horizontally. This is fundamentally different from a structure in which a single chain fights over capacity.

The Avalanche9000 (Etna) upgrade on December 16, 2024 lowered the cost of entry for this design. Validators for a dedicated L1 previously had to stake 2,000 AVAX, but they can now participate with just an ongoing fee of roughly 1.33 AVAX per month.

At the same time, the C-Chain's minimum base fee was also cut from 25 nAVAX to 1 nAVAX.

That said, the old requirement's structure—"the more L1s there are, the more staking demand piles up in units of 2,000 AVAX"—has been replaced by monthly billing under this change. The distance between growth in L1s and demand for AVAX has widened compared with before.

From Aave V4 to Games | What You Can Touch on Avalanche

As of July 2026, everything from major DeFi to large-scale games is actually running on Avalanche.

In particular, Aave V4 on July 15, 2026 is a case where Avalanche was chosen as the first deployment destination beyond Ethereum. The Avalanche Foundation has pledged up to $15 million in milestone-based incentives.

Corporate use has begun to move as well. On July 9, 2026, Hyundai Motor Group announced it had piloted a $20,000 USDT business-to-business transfer from the U.S. to Mexico on Avalanche.

Settlement that previously took more than three to four hours finished in about seven minutes, and Visa and Circle are reported to be slated to join the second phase.

On the other hand, the relationships with BlackRock and Citi listed on the official page don't go beyond self-disclosure. The same goes for the migration of 452 billion yen worth of digital securities by Progmat, part of the Mitsubishi UFJ Trust group; the nature of that information differs from Hyundai's pilot, which was corroborated by third-party reporting.

In stablecoin settlement, dedicated chains such as Arc, developed by Circle, are also entering the field, and competition in this area has only just begun.

The AVAX Token and a Development Team Born at Cornell

AVAX has a hard cap of 720 million tokens in total supply, and is designed so that all network fees are burned.

The supply-increasing side comes from newly issued staking rewards, and the mechanism lowers the issuance rate as it approaches the cap. The breakdown of the allocation ratio is not stated in the official Tokenomics FAQ, and this article treats it as unconfirmed.

If you're after an airdrop, the answer is clear: there is currently no participatory airdrop for AVAX itself. The 2.5% genesis allocation was also distributed back in 2020.

The current Retro9000 (a $40 million program) is a retroactive grant for developers, and since March 2026 its distribution criterion has shifted to "the amount of AVAX burned = actual usage." It is not the kind of program where ordinary users complete tasks to earn rewards.

Ava Labs, Born Out of a Cornell University Lab

The origins of developer Ava Labs are pure academia—rare in the crypto industry. Emin Gün Sirer, a computer science professor at Cornell University, founded it in 2018 together with two of his own doctoral students.

Emin Gün SirerCo-founder & CEOCornell CS professor (distributed systems research)
Kevin SekniqiCo-founder & COOResearched under Sirer in Cornell's doctoral program from 2016
Maofan "Ted" YinCo-founder & Chief Protocol ArchitectFrom the same doctoral program

Sirer's starting point was Karma, a decentralized currency he co-developed in 2003 to solve the "users who only download and never contribute" problem in P2P file sharing. It predated Bitcoin by five years, but according to him he was told that "this kind of research won't get funding because of concerns about financing terrorism," and it never went mainstream.

The turning point was a consensus paper published in May 2018 by an anonymous group called Team Rocket. Sirer said he "verified the draft and immediately realized I was witnessing a major breakthrough," and this became the direct trigger for founding Ava Labs.

In August 2022, the whistleblower site Crypto Leaks reported allegations that it was involved in litigation against a competing chain. Sirer flatly denied it as "categorically without foundation," and the truth remains undetermined.

Will Real Usage Reach AVAX's Supply and Demand? | 2026 Outlook Framework

Avalanche's 2026 evaluation comes down to how institutional adoption progresses and whether that usage reaches the supply and demand of the AVAX asset.

The usage figures are substantial, and daily transaction counts and active addresses can be verified by anyone via the official API. Even setting aside the accompanying grant programs, the fact remains that large-scale transactions paying fees out of pocket continue.

The problem is how narrow the path is for that usage to flow back into AVAX's value. Fees are burned in full, but after Etna's reduction, the same transaction volume has largely lost its power to reduce supply.

On the other hand, newly issued staking rewards continue until the supply cap.

VAVX, a spot ETF with staking rewards, is already listed, and its fee was said to be waived until assets under management reached $500 million or February 28, 2026, whichever came first, but the current management fee is 0.20%.

Aave V4's RWA-focused market and Hyundai's second phase also remain, for now, in the realm of plans. Whether this group of plans turns into results, and how the balance between burning and issuance trends, will be the material for gauging whether the current market valuation is warranted.

Everything from acquiring AVAX to staking it can be completed with just a domestic exchange and the official Core wallet.

Image: Screenshot of Core (the official wallet) (captured July 24, 2026)

  1. Open an account on a domestic exchange (such as bitbank) and buy AVAX
  2. Install the official Core wallet (browser extension / mobile)
  3. Send AVAX from the exchange to your Core C-Chain address (try a small amount first)
  4. If staking, move the assets to the P-Chain within Core and delegate to a validator (minimum 25 AVAX)
  5. Check the delegate's fee rate (minimum 2%) and the delegation-period terms on screen before confirming

Summary

Even in 2026, which had no shortage of headlines like the ETF listing and Hyundai's pilot, what actually moves AVAX's supply and demand is a plain figure: the amount of fees burned daily on the C-Chain. Whether the bold design decision to slash the minimum fee succeeds will ultimately show up in this single number too.
