Project Details

Obol is a project aimed at promoting the decentralization of staking in Ethereum's Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus. Specifically, it aims to address the challenge of staking centralization and achieve a more secure and decentralized Ethereum network.

Project Background and Objectives

With Ethereum's transition to PoS, staking has taken on a crucial role in ensuring the security of the network. However, the centralization of staking is recognized as a potential risk to the network's health. If staking becomes concentrated in the hands of a few entities, the network's fault tolerance decreases, and it may become vulnerable to attacks.

Obol developed Distributed Validator Technology (DVT) to address this issue. DVT mitigates the risk of staking centralization by constructing a distributed validator system consisting of multiple nodes, rather than a single validator.

How DVT Works

DVT is a mechanism where multiple nodes jointly operate a single validator. Each node holds a part of the validator's key and jointly creates signatures. This ensures the validator's availability even if some nodes fail or are attacked, as the remaining nodes can continue to operate normally.

Key Advantages of DVT

  • Improved Fault Tolerance: Eliminating single points of failure improves network availability.
  • Promotes Decentralization: Suppresses staking centralization and enhances network health.
  • Enhanced Security: Operating a validator with multiple nodes builds a more robust defense against attacks.

Obol's Initiatives

Obol is pursuing the following initiatives to put DVT into practical use:

  • Charon: A middleware client that enables DVT implementation. It works with existing validator clients and simplifies the operation of distributed validators.
  • Obol Splits: A smart contract for distributing rewards from distributed validators.
  • Obol Testnets: A testnet environment for testing DVT before deployment on the mainnet.
  • Community Development: Collaborating with developers, researchers, and community members to further develop DVT.

Obol's Vision

Obol aims for DVT to become the standard technology for staking in Ethereum. They believe that the adoption of DVT will allow more users to participate in staking safely and easily, accelerating the decentralization of the Ethereum network.

Funding Information

Obol Labs raised $6.15 million in a Seed round in October 2021 from investors such as Ethereal Ventures and Coinbase, and $12.5 million in a Series A round in January 2023 from investors including Pantera, totaling $18.65 million in funding.

Airdrop Information

The Obol Contributions program, launched in August 2024, offers an opportunity to contribute to Ethereum's scaling through staking. 1% of staking rewards are donated to the Obol Collective's retroactive funding (RAF), and those who stake gain access to future community governance and ownership.
