Layer 2 is a scaling technology that makes Ethereum transactions faster and cheaper.

"Ethereum fees are too high..." "Transactions are too slow..."

Layer 2 (L2) solves these problems.

This guide explains how Layer 2 works and how to use it, even if you're a complete beginner.

Let's try moving funds from Ethereum to an L2 using a "bridge"!

What you'll learn in this guide

✅ How to reduce gas fees by 100x or more with L2

✅ Key differences between major L2 chains in a comparison table

✅ Step-by-step instructions for bridging to L2

✅ Airdrop opportunities on L2

What Is Layer 2 (L2)?

Ethereum is the most popular blockchain.

However, its popularity comes with problems: slow transactions and high gas fees.

Think of it like a traffic jam on a highway.

Too many cars (transactions) are trying to get through, making the trip slow and expensive.

Layer 2 (L2) was created to bypass that congestion.

It's like a "bypass road" connected to the main highway (Ethereum).

It keeps the security of the main chain while offering faster, cheaper, and smoother transactions.

How L2 Works (Rollups & Sidechains)

L2 uses a technology called "rollups" that bundles transactions and reports them to Ethereum.

Imagine one person going to the checkout counter with items for five people instead of everyone standing in line separately.

It's more efficient and the fees are much lower.

There are two main types of rollups.

Optimistic Rollup vs. ZK Rollup

ItemOptimistic RollupZK Rollup
VerificationFraud proof (7-day challenge period)Zero-knowledge proof (instant verification)
Withdrawal time~7 daysMinutes
Gas feesLowSlightly higher (proof generation cost)
ExamplesArbitrum, Optimism, BasezkSync, Scroll, StarkNet

Optimistic Rollup works on the assumption that transactions are valid and only investigates if a fraud claim is submitted. ZK Rollup provides instant mathematical proof of correctness.

How to Use L2 (Bridge Guide)

To use L2, you first need to move funds from Ethereum (L1) to L2.

This process is called bridging.

Step 1: Send ETH to L2 (Bridge)

Here are the main official bridge sites:

1. Prepare Your Wallet

First, prepare a wallet that can connect to Ethereum.

We recommend these two:

2. Visit the Bridge Site and Connect

Go to the bridge site and click "Connect Wallet."

When your wallet pops up, approve the connection.

3. Set the Network to Ethereum

Make sure your wallet is set to "Ethereum Mainnet."

4. Select the Destination L2 and Enter the Amount

Choose Arbitrum or Optimism as the "Destination Network."

Enter the amount of ETH you want to send and click "Bridge" or "Transfer."

5. Confirm the Bridge Is Complete

The bridge will complete in a few minutes to around ten minutes.

Switch your wallet's network to the destination L2 (e.g., Arbitrum) and check your ETH balance.

You've made your L2 debut!

Step 2: Make a Transaction on L2

Once the bridge is complete, try making a transaction on L2.

We recommend decentralized exchanges (DEXs) like Uniswap or 1inch.

Check out this guide for instructions:

👉 How to Swap Tokens (Uniswap Guide)

How It Works

  1. Open a DEX
  2. Switch your wallet's network to L2 (e.g., Arbitrum)
  3. Swap a small amount of ETH for another token

On L1, a single transaction can cost hundreds of yen,

but on L2 it costs just a few yen. The speed is dramatically faster too.

Airdrop Opportunities on L2

Some L2 chains haven't issued their own tokens yet. By using these chains early, you may be eligible for future airdrops (free token distributions).

L2 chains with airdrop potential (as of 2026):

  • Base: Operated by Coinbase. No token issued yet, so there's airdrop potential
  • Ink: Operated by Kraken. Also no token issued — using it now could lead to airdrop opportunities

In the past, Arbitrum and Optimism conducted large-scale airdrops for early users. Using L2 regularly for DeFi and NFT transactions can position you for future airdrops.

Tips and Precautions

  • Wait a moment after bridging to confirm the transfer has gone through
  • Withdrawing from L2 → L1 can take hours to days
  • Never use bridge sites other than official ones
  • If in doubt, start with Arbitrum or Base

Frequently Asked Questions About Layer 2

Q. What is Layer 2?

Layer 2 (L2) is a scaling technology built on top of Ethereum (L1). By processing transactions on L2 and recording them on L1, it reduces fees by 100x or more and dramatically improves processing speed.

Q. What is the difference between L1 and L2?

L1 is the main chain like Ethereum. L2 is a fast, low-cost processing layer built on top of it. Security is provided by L1, while L2 improves speed and cost.

Q. Which L2 chain do you recommend?

For beginners, we recommend Arbitrum (largest TVL, airdrop history) and Base (operated by Coinbase, growing fast). For advanced DeFi users, ZK-based chains like zkSync are also worth watching.

Q. How do I bridge to L2?

Move ETH to L2 using an official bridge or a third-party bridge like Stargate. After adding the L2 network to MetaMask, simply send ETH through the bridge site.

Conclusion: Learning L2 Is Your First Step to Becoming a Power User

By using L2, even those who felt Ethereum was "expensive and slow" can experience the "fast and cheap" on-chain world.

Start by bridging a small amount of ETH and swapping a token on L2.

That single step will open up a whole new world of crypto.

Many recent crypto projects are built on L2, so learning how to use L2 is a major step toward earning airdrops.
